About Scrutiny

These pages contain more information about public scrutiny, and examples of investigations conducted by scrutiny practitioners.

Introduction to scrutiny - these pages provide an up-to-date explanation of how public services in England and Wales are held to account. You can find out about accountability in policing, housing, education, transport, central and local government, and more.

Library - CfPS operates a library of investigations carried out by overview and scrutiny committees in local authorities. These committees, many of whom regularly produce reports and recommendations to their councils' leaderships, are the principal means by which local decision-making is held to account. The library is particularly useful for scrutiny professionals looking for previous research on particular subject areas.

Jobs - jobs which are relevant to scrutiny and accountability in the public sector are posted here, along with CfPS's own vacancies.
