CfPS to review governance at Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea

Posted on September 12, 2017 by Nicolay Sorensen.

The Centre for Public Scrutiny (CfPS) has been asked to undertake an independent review of governance and scrutiny at the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea (RBKC). The Local Government Association will pay CfPS for this work. This review forms part of council’s response to the Grenfell Tower fire.

CfPS is a charity whose purpose is to improve lives and places through effective governance and scrutiny. We have a long history of providing support to local government, as well as other public services and sectors, this includes helping councils facing high profile governance challenges.

The review will cover the following areas:

  • Community engagement in decision making;
  • Governance options;
  • Ensuring that formal council meetings are constructive and effective;
  • The role, function and resourcing of oversight and scrutiny arrangements.

The review and public engagement will be particularly sensitive to the ongoing and lasting impact that the Grenfell Tower fire has had on residents across the Borough.

CfPS’s work will begin as soon as the design phase has been completed and will heavily focus on speaking to RBKC residents to inform the recommendations of the review which is planned to be published in April 2018. More information about this project will be published on this website as the work is carried out.

Additional steps already taken by RBKC to drive transparency and openness, in addition to this review, is a commitment to broadcast full council and senior leadership team meetings in the future.

If you have any questions about the RBKC governance review please contact Ed Hammond on or call 020 3866 5109.
