Hi Emma,

At Cambridgeshire County Council there are three full time scrutiny staff. There is also currently one full time member of staff seconded to the team until February.

Can't remember exact salary range, but it is approx £30K - £37K.

We have one person (me) but it's only half my post as I also service Community Services and undertake the Member Development functions. As for salary................................I think pittance best describes it!

Hi Emma,

We at CfPS have a great deal of info on this from our Annual Survey.

Nationally, the position looks like this:

2.9 FTE officers (of those who have a dedicated officer)

In districts, it looks like this:

1.4 FTE officers (of those who have a dedicated officer)

We don't collect salaries (you're right, people tend to be unwilling to put them in!) but very roughly it's possible to make the following assessment based on recent job adverts:

Scrutiny posts can vary in pay from about £17-18,000 pa (for a junior "twin-hatter" officer predominantly responsible for committee admin) to £70,000+ pa (for a manager). The average for a scrutiny officer, outside London, is probably £23,000 to £33,000 although there are obviously outliers which aren't reflected in this range. Generally districts pay towards the lower end of this scale although some do offer quite generous renumeration.

If you want comparative data from last year or the year before then please ask.

They are... although the 2009 survey (the one we did a couple of months ago) is technically the "2008 survey, as it relates to work undertaken at the end of the 2008 municipal year. At least I think that's the reason.
