RE: providing an e-petition facility
Nick Beale Wrote:The Local Democracy, Economic Development & Construction Bill (S.10) says that "(1) A principal local authority must provide a facility for making petitions in electronic form to the authority."

Royal Assent isn't due before Autumn and then there's got to be a commencement order, but our Consultation Manager is interested in how other councils are interpreting the proposed requirement:

- A facility on tthe website to "start your petition here" (like Downing Street has)?

- A mailbox for petitions@westbogford.gov.uk?

- Someting else?

In a sane world the government would pay Tom Steinberg or someone like him to develop the software and add some value (e.g. by letting voters see what sort of petitions people in other areas have come up with...)

RE: providing an e-petition facility
At Maidstone we're planning on doing the same as Lambeth - theirs is via the same committee administration system as we use (Modern.Gov) and it's an inbuilt facility which makes life easier.

I once heard a rumour that the software used on the Downing Street website is available for free from somewhere, but I don't know where I heard this or where you'd get it...

Turns out it was mysociety.org who did the Downing Street website and who've done a version for local councils that you can get from here http://www.mysociety.org/services/petitions/

So I was barking up the right tree after all...
