Funny you should say that. One of the the officers, who appears as a witness regularly at our scrutiny review boards, said to me the other day he was watching Dragon's Den and the programme conjured up an extraordinary sense of familiarity with the experience of appearing before one of our scrutiny scrutiny select committees!

It made me wonder, if we have in fact achieved this, whether this is a good thing or a bad thing!

I was asked by a colleague, years ago, why I don't believe partners can be relied upon solely to scrutinize policy proposals.

I said 'Imagine having to pitch a policy proposal to five people, each of whom has their own vested interests, each of whom wants to get what they can out of the process.' He looked at me sceptically. I should have just said 'It'd be just like Dragons Den.'

So which programme offers a better model for scrutiny; Dragons Den or Total Wipeout?

Good analogy, except the Dragons have loads of money and scrutiny ... errrrrr ... hasn't.

Come to think of it, that would be a great way to raise scrutiny 's profile. Give OSCs all the money and make the Cabinet come along and pitch their policies/projects in the hope of securing the necessary investment.
