RE: Local Authorities (Overview and Scrutiny) Bill
Apparently the Minister is considering whether to devote additional Government time to the third reading.

Not sure when a decision is likely to be made, but we will chase.

Just to add to this, the Secretary of State is aware of the problem that has been caused and he is considering the options available to conclude the Bill. As Ed has spelt out above, one of this is seeking Government time. Our Chair has protested in the House. We hope to hear back from CLG as to what they intend to do by the end of the week. I have to say, it's not looking very encouraging at present.

In other scrutiny related legislation news, Barbara Follett has now tabled a commencement order for the duty to respond to petitions (15 June and 15 Dec for e-petitions). In Nottinghamshire we have a small group of Members developing our approach to this, through scrutiny. Have the CfPS got anything in the pipeline?

See http://services.parliament.uk/bills/2009...utiny.html where it just says "The Bill has since been dropped and will make no further progress."

Yes, this would appear to be the case (still no word from CLG on this).

Hopefully some of you saw last week's article in the MJ by our Chair about this.

We will now be concentrating our efforts on ensuring that any post-election legislation incorporates some of the provisions in the Bill.

Nothing specifically on petitions at present, though we are planning something on scrutiny and working with the public more widely which is likely to include petitions.

Is this something that would be of interest to other Forum members? (both the narrow issue of dealing with petitions and engaging the public in general)

Hi Jessica,

I'm sure this would be of interest. However I would suggest linking up with the Consultation Institute who have expertise in public engagement as well as Petitions and having already run some very good courses/workshops on petition schemes.
