Job Vacancy: Scrutiny Manager, London Borough of Newham
£33,510 pa - £38, 961pa
The Newham Overview and Scrutiny Unit has an opening for a talented individual to join our team. Newham is one of London’s most diverse boroughs and host to the 2012 Olympics and we’re looking for someone who shares our commitment to making Newham a place where people choose to live and work. The Overview and Scrutiny Unit is responsible for supporting elected Members in conducting the key role of acting as a check and balance to ensure that decision making is robust and policy development is sound.
The Person: We’re looking for someone who not only has a good understanding of local government, an in-depth knowledge of local authority governance and partnership arrangements and their functioning, but also someone who has a good and in-depth knowledge of the Health sector and the challenges faced by Newham in this sector.
This is because the successful candidate will primarily support the Health Scrutiny Commission, which has an ambitious remit and role, especially in light of the recently formed Clinical Commissioning Group as well as the merger of three acute trusts to form Barts and the London, developments around Health and Wellbeing Boards and HealthWattch.
Bringing your excellent project management, policy development and research skills to the role, you will have ample opportunity to further develop these skills in the varied and interesting work you will undertake. Experience of working with elected Members, senior officers and partner organisations (especially Health partners) is a requirement, as is the ability to build and maintain strong working relationships with these key role-players.
You will be skilled in working in a political environment; your report writing skills will be of a high quality as will your ability to provide both oral and written briefings to a wide range of audiences. There are times when the unit works to tight deadlines and when it has to effectively manage competing work demands and you will be able to deal with this competently. In this role we’d expect you to promote and demonstrate a practical commitment to equal opportunities.
