An exciting secondment opportunity has arisen to work at the heart of Westminster, using your skills and expertise to support MPs as the Committee Specialist in the secretariat of the House of Commons Communities and Local Government Select Committee. The secondment will last until the end of the current Parliament.
As part of a small, professional team you will have responsibility for running inquiries for the committee. This will include preparing briefing material and drafting reports, conducting analysis and liaising with witnesses and external experts. In addition, you will be expected to keep abreast of key developments in local government policy and the Committee’s wider remit, in order to give advice to members of the Committee.
You can expect to gain analytical, drafting and networking experience which will be of benefit to both you and the organization you currently work for. You will also gain a different political perspective, and develop an insight into the work of Members of Parliament and of Parliament as a whole.

The Committee team is looking for someone with a broad knowledge of, and preferably experience of working in, local government. You may, for example, have worked at a strategic level in local government, or in the overview and scrutiny function. In addition you will be able to build and maintain effective working relationships with a wide variety of people.

The Scrutiny Team is looking for a highly motivated individual to join them in developing exciting and innovative approaches to Overview and Scrutiny following a recent review.
You will help the Council’s Overview and Scrutiny Panels to scrutinise the work of the Council and its Local Area Agreement partners and contribute to achievement of their objectives through constructive challenge, performance assessment and policy development / review.
As lead officer supporting a number of Scrutiny Panels and Working Groups you will develop and manage work programmes, write and present reports, provide briefings carry out research and help develop and deliver scrutiny training.
You will have an ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing, to analyse, understand and communicate complex information about a wide range of topics and to facilitate discussion to help develop consensus.
Experience of scrutiny, policy or similar work in a political or committee environment, is desirable.
