The Centre for Public Scrutiny promotes the value of scrutiny and accountability in modern and effective government and supports non-executives in their scrutiny role
Last updated:27 May 2010
CfPS is currently working with the National Overview and Scrutiny Forum, and others, to put together detailed plans for a series of regional events to be held in the autumn and early winter.
Our current plans are to hold 7 of these events across England and Wales, to provide partners, members and officers working on the executive side to discuss the way forward for local accountability. The regional scrutiny networks will be closely involved in this work.
We will be focusing on what we consider to be the two main drivers for those being scrutinised to be positive about further measure to enhance their accountability. First, the issue of public trust, and the need to demonstrate that strong local accountability will replace centrally-mandated inspection through CAA, when it is abolished. Secondly, the advent of Total Place, and the need to ensure that decisions being made around operational efficiencies and different ways of working are as robust as possible across the who’le area.
We are also developing an “Accountability Charter”, which will provide public organisations (local authorities, partners and other bodies) with the opportunity to make a public commitment to the principles in our “Accountability Works” document. The National Overview and Scrutiny Forum will be closely involved with this process. If you want to discuss this, or any of our other plans, with us directly, you are more than welcome to do so.
