On 1st April the CQC announced that it had completed the initial registration of the 378 NHS trusts in England for compliance with essential standards, including patient safety, treating people with respect, and involving patients.
Twenty two trusts were registered conditionally, with improvements to be implemented within a set timescale. Fifteen of these are acute trusts, four mental health, two PCTs and one ambulance trust. Twelve of the 22 are Foundation Trusts.
Cynthia Bower, the CQC’s chief executive, said: “Most conditions were imposed in relation to the care and welfare of people who use services. This makes clear that some trusts must do more to make sure people experience effective, safe and appropriate care that meets their needs and respects their rights.”
From now on Trusts will be continuously monitored by the CQC drawing information from a range of sources, including HOSCs, creating quality-and-risk profiles for every trust in the country. The CQC also promises to take more account of the views of the public, by systematically gathering the views of local patient groups and ensuring that patients have greater involvement in inspections.
The CQC has enforcement powers starting with a warning notice escalating to fines, prosecution, restrictions on activities or in extreme cases, closure.
