The support of a mentor for new PGRs will be important in helping them to make a good start as an effective contributor to the overview and scrutiny committee which looks at education matters. The effectiveness of PGRs requires understanding and acknowledgement of their role from officer and membercolleagues in the scrutiny function and across the council.
Those takingon the role of a mentor should be able to help to raise awareness and ensure that PGRs are not marginalized but integrated full members of the scrutiny committee to which they are appointed.
The pack includes a 12 month review. This should provide a good opportunity to reflect on how the first year has gone and what both the PGR, you as a mentor and the local authority could do in the future in support of effective scrutiny.
